Migrating to Google Biz Apps – Notes

Check out https://www.google.com/accounts/NewAccount and notice that it asks you for your “current email address.” So let’s say I go to school at Big University and I have an email address helpfulmcgoogler@biguni.edu… I can use that email address while signing up and that will be my login name to access Google services.
so I should have used comras@gmail.com?
What you do is create a NORMAL Google Account (described at the beginning) and associate it with your gina@example.com email address. That “vanilla” google account will now have access to all (well, I think all) Google services.
Do I really want to do this?
My issues:

If the troubleshooter does not return any errors, we recommend running ping, traceroute, and telnet tests to check the the connection to our IMAP service.
To open a command prompt on Windows: 1) Open the Start menu, and select Run. 2) Enter command in the ‘Open:’ field, and click OK.
On Mac: Open the terminal program, usually located under your Mac HD -> ‘Applications’ directory -> ‘Utilities’ sub-directory.
Ping Test: 1) Enter ‘ping imap.gmail.com’ into a command prompt 2) Allow the process to ping a few times 3) Press CTRL-C or CMD-C to stop the process 4) Copy the results of the test into your reply email
Traceroute Test: 1) Enter ‘tracert imap.gmail.com’ into a command prompt 2) Copy the results of the test into your reply email
Telnet Test: – for POP3: telnet pop.gmail.com 995 – for IMAP: telnet imap.gmail.com 993 – for SMTP server: telnet smtp.gmail.com 465
Please include the output from these tests in a reply to this message.
As an additional troubleshooting step, you can try toggling between imap.gmail.com, and imap.googlemail.com for the incoming server, and between smtp.gmail.com and smtp.googlemail.com for the outgoing server.
You can also try toggling between outgoing ports 465 and 587.
